Wisdom Teeth Extractions
In addition to regular dental extractions, we perform wisdom teeth removal. They are often the last of your teeth to erupt, usually during the ages of 17-25, and are located in the back of your mouth. For most people, there is not enough space in the mouth to allow wisdom teeth to erupt properly and functionally. This causes the tooth to become impacted, or stuck, in a harmful position.
There are 3 types of impaction that can occur. Soft tissue impaction is when the top of the tooth has penetrated through the bone but the gum still covers all or part of the crown. Partial bony impaction is when the tooth has partially erupted, but a portion of the crown remains below the gum and jawbone. Complete bony impaction is when the tooth is completely encased by the jawbone.
When to remove wisdom teeth
Not all wisdom teeth will require removal. Often they are performed due to pain, swelling, infection, or as a preventative measure. Leaving your wisdom teeth untreated can result in:
- Damage to nearby teeth: Your second molars in front can be affected by impacted wisdom teeth causing cavities, gum disease, and possible bone loss.
- Disease: Although uncommon, tumours and cysts may occur in surrounding areas of impacted wisdom teeth.
- Infection: Food and bacteria may get trapped under the gum tissue and cause an infection, causing pain and danger.
- Tooth crowding: Some dentists theorize that impacted wisdom teeth may put pressure on other teeth and cause them to become misaligned.
How is wisdom teeth extraction performed?
Prior to extraction, a thorough examination and x-rays are done to evaluate the position and issues with your wisdom teeth. The procedure itself is common and often performed under local or general anesthesia or IV sedation.
