Inlay restoration is a custom filling made of tooth-coloured porcelain or composite material. Inlays are an ideal alternative to conventional silver fillings and are more conservative than crowns due to less removal of tooth structure during preparation. Highly durable and long-lasting, your inlays may require replacement after normal wear.
Inlay restoration takes two appointments. During your first appointment, several impressions will be made to create your inlay and temporary restoration. After numbing, the dentist removes any decay and old fillings. The surface is then cleaned and shaped to fit the inlay. The temporary filling is applied to protect your tooth.
At your second appointment, a new inlay is cemented into place. Adjustments may be required to ensure a proper fit and bite. Your dentist will provide you with proper aftercare instructions. Please note that proper oral hygiene practice and regular dental visits will keep your inlays in optimal condition.
Onlays are the same as inlays with the exception that one or more of the chewing cusps have also been affected and will need to be restored. An inlay will fill the space in-between the cusp while the onlay covers the entire biting surface of the tooth. Onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns.
